KTC’s Emergency Services Program has secured funding for the next three years to enhance support for the five Member Nations in Emergency Management. Our program’s role is not to take over during a disaster but to provide vital support for preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery. We focus on educating communities to be better prepared for emergencies, empowering them to handle situations more effectively.
Designed with adaptability in mind, the program can be shared with other Nations to help them develop similar emergency management frameworks without starting from scratch. KTC has worked closely with Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) headquarters and received strong support from all ISC regions, the Alberta Government, AEMA, and many First Nations communities.
Additionally, KTC has been instrumental in helping Canada prepare for a National Engagement session focused on the Service Transfer initiative. This initiative aims to give First Nations the option to take control of services traditionally managed by ISC, such as housing, infrastructure, health, education, and emergency services.
KTC was honored to present our Emergency Management Program as a best practice at the National Community of Practice Gathering: Housing & Infrastructure Service Delivery in Toronto. This gathering, the first of its kind, brought together key partners to share best practices, build relationships, and discuss service delivery models, business plans, and guiding principles from First Nations for navigating the transfer of service delivery.
