A major step forward in energy access and Nation-led development is underway with the KTC-ATCO Gasification Project. This $67 million partnership between KTC and ATCO will bring natural gas infrastructure to several KTC Nations, improving energy reliability and supporting long-term economic growth.
In January, Chief Isaac and ATCO leaders met with Alberta’s Minister Neudorf, who gave a verbal commitment that the province will fund the $25 million portion of project costs that would normally fall to customers. ATCO has also committed $25 million of its own capital. We are now waiting for formal written confirmation from the province before launching construction.
KTC is also working with ATCO and potential General Contractors to explore a Joint Venture for project delivery—ensuring our Nations are directly involved in construction and benefit from job creation, training, and long-term revenue opportunities, without taking on the full financial or regulatory burden of utility ownership. Next steps will include direct engagement with each of the nations economic development teams and companies.
Also, Looking ahead, there’s growing interest in using this new energy infrastructure to power a potential gas-fueled data center—a project that could generate even more economic opportunities for our Nations.
We’ll continue to share updates as they become available.
